Sloths move so slowly through the trees that algae can grow on their fur.
The longer version
A leaf diet supplies very little energy, so a sloth runs its body at a low metabolic rate and digests food over an exceptionally long period. Movement is slow because there is simply no spare fuel for speed.
That sluggishness creates conditions other animals rarely offer. The fur of a sloth has grooves that hold moisture, and in humid forest air it becomes a miniature habitat where green algae take hold, along with fungi and moths that live nowhere else. The coat also provides camouflage against the canopy. Slowness therefore becomes a strategy, trading activity for a low profile and a very small energy budget.
