Cows have best friends and become calmer when they are kept near them.
The longer version
Cattle are social animals with stable preferences, and individuals form stronger bonds with certain companions than with the rest of the herd. These preferred partners groom each other, graze side by side and choose to rest close together more often than chance would predict.
Bonded pairs show measurably lower stress responses. When separated, heart rate rises and the animals vocalise and move about more. Keeping familiar partners together appears to smooth daily life in a herd, particularly around regrouping, milking or transport. Herd structure is maintained through a loose dominance order settled by displays rather than constant fighting, so stable relationships reduce the amount of conflict a group experiences.
