Random Facts Useless Knowledge

About Random Facts

Random Facts is a reading site built around one simple idea: small pieces of general knowledge are easier to enjoy when they are short, sorted and free of noise. Every entry on the site is a single sentence, and every category page carries a short introduction so you know what you are about to read before you start.

What we publish

The library covers everyday subjects: animals, the human body, food, space, geography, history, science, weather, plants, oceans, insects, birds, words, numbers, sport, sleep, colour, time, sound and the ordinary objects people handle without thinking about them. Nothing here is news, opinion, or instruction. The point is the detail, not the takeaway.

How entries are chosen

An entry has to clear three tests before it is listed. It has to be checkable against ordinary reference material. It has to stand alone without a paragraph of setup. And it has to be the kind of thing a reader can repeat accurately from memory. Anything that depends on a precise statistic we cannot verify is left out rather than rounded off, and when a figure is approximate the wording says so.

What the site is not

This is not a reference work, and it is not advice. Entries about the body, food, sleep or money are written as trivia and should not be used to make decisions. Where a subject needs a professional opinion, the honest answer is to go and get one.

Reading the site

Each category page lists its entries in order, and the header of every page links back to the full category list. If you would rather not choose, the Random Pick button in the top bar takes you to a category picked at random. New collections are added over time, and existing lists are reviewed so that duplicates and stale wording get removed.
