Ancient Greek athletes trained and competed without clothing, and the word gymnasium reflects that custom.

The longer version

Greek athletes trained and competed unclothed, and the habit gave the language a lasting word: a term meaning naked became the name of the place where young men exercised. Oil was rubbed on the skin before events, partly to protect it and partly to make grappling in contact events harder. Dust was then sprinkled over the oil.

Why the custom began is argued: some sources link it to a runner whose waistband fell off, others to the idea that displaying the trained body was itself the point. Either way, nudity marked the event as Greek and separated it from foreign spectacles. Romans later found the practice embarrassing, and the modern revival restored clothing while keeping the old vocabulary in school halls.
