Plants and Trees · entry 15 of 52
Conifers keep their needles through winter, which lets them start growing as soon as weather warms.
The longer version
Needles are built to last for several years rather than a single season. Their thick waxy surface and small surface area limit water loss, which matters in winter when frozen ground makes taking up water difficult. Keeping foliage means the tree avoids the cost of replacing it.
Because the canopy is already in place, a conifer can begin photosynthesising as soon as temperatures rise, gaining weeks that a bare deciduous tree must spend growing new leaves first. Shedding happens gradually, with the oldest needles dropping while newer ones stay on the branch. The needle shape also sheds snow easily, which reduces the risk of branches breaking under a heavy load.
