The Great Pyramid was built as a royal tomb thousands of years ago.
The longer version
Royal burials in old Egypt were built around a belief that the king needed a prepared resting place filled with goods for the afterlife. The biggest pyramid at Giza formed part of a larger complex with temples, causeways and smaller tombs for relatives and officials, all laid out around the burial chamber deep inside the stone mass.
Building it required moving millions of blocks, feeding and housing large work crews, and keeping survey lines accurate over a huge base. Ramps, sledges and levers were used to raise the stone, while plasterers and masons finished the outer casing. The result still shows how organized taxation, labour and record keeping had become.
