Geography · entry 14 of 52
Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano that rises alone above the plains of Tanzania.
The longer version
A solitary mountain often forms where magma pushes up through flat crust, stacking layer upon layer of ash and lava. Dormant means quiet for now, not permanently dead; the system below can still release gas or warm springs. Its height comes from repeated eruptions over a long period.
Altitude creates stacked climate bands. The base may be warm and farmed, while the upper slopes turn to moorland and then to ice. Snow and small glaciers persist near the summit despite the tropical latitude because temperature drops with height. Those ice fields have been shrinking as the regional climate warms.
