Human Body · entry 1 of 52
Your heart beats roughly a hundred thousand times every single day without any rest.
The longer version
The cardiac cycle never truly pauses, because the muscle has its own electrical timing system. A small cluster of cells in the heart's upper chamber fires an impulse roughly once a second, and that signal spreads through specialised fibres that make the chambers squeeze in the right order. Between beats the muscle relaxes and refills, and that brief pause is when the heart's own blood supply flows in.
Over a single day the total reaches roughly a hundred thousand beats, and over a lifetime the figure climbs into the billions. The muscle is also self-repairing only to a limited degree, which is why its rhythm matters so much.
